Lake Greenwood Striper Fishing

Greenwood Lake fishing is excellent during any time of the year, no matter what you are targeting. Almost. The striper population in the lake is not as good as the other fish species, but you can still have a great day out when targeting this fish, the trick is knowing the when and the where to go looking for the little guys.

Now, Greenwood Lake is not known as being a great location among the South Carolina lakes for stripers, but as already pointed out there is still a good fishing trip opportunity here. At the moment, the lake is stocked bi-annually with 25 fish per acre. This stocking policy brings the entire fish restock amount, including stripers, to over a quarter of a million fish. It is partly this reason why the lake is still a fun place for striper fishing.

Seasons and movements

There may not be very many large stripers in Lake Greenwood, but the fishing yield is still generally very good and there is a lot of action through late summer and fall. During late summer, the fish are stacked up which of course makes striper fish a whole lot simpler. When fall comes around, during these months the fish will start to push shad to the water’s surface which will create nice school-fishing in, generally speaking, the same part of the lake.

The majority of anglers, during August, use live threadfin shad will then fish the open, main body of Greenwood Lake. During this they will stay inside of a mile, maybe two, of the dam. Some fishermen will begin searching with electronic fish finders. Other anglers might set their lines down and let them drift. If there is no drift to be had, they will very often use trolling motors to ‘create’ a drift.

When and where should you fish for striper?

Night or day for Striper fishing? Well, that is more a matter of personal opinion but some anglers will happily fish at night time. They will anchor over humps that rise close to deep water and they will then shine torches into the water. Live bait is used in the majority of cases, but they might spread the live bait over a range of depths because stripers will often feed in shallower water when the sun goes down.

The best and most popular area for striper fishing, according to many anglers, is down below Buzzards Roost in the tailwater area. This area is well known for its springtime striper run. This is when the fish come up from Lake Murray in a spawning attempt. That being said, the area is also very popular with stripes during the summer when the fish will stay in the area for the warm water that is coming through from the dam.

Greenwood Lake has a wide and diverse range of fish species, and while the striper population is among the smallest in the lake does not mean that a good day’s (or night’s) fishing can’t be had… Because it can.
